US, Japan Move Toward Trade Deal; Netanyahu Weighs Annexing Gaza; Uganda Faces Potential Refugee Crisis

July 30, 2025

Good Morning,

North Korea's potential future nuclear status takes center stage with Trump called on to accept Pyongyang's weapons program, while Middle East negotiations remain stalled as Netanyahu points to Hamas obstinacy in hostage talks and weighs Gaza annexation. Meanwhile, trade talks are moving along as the US and Japan secure favorable chip and pharmaceutical tariff agreements, though some European leaders express anger over new EU-US trade arrangements. Humanitarian concerns mount in Uganda as diminishing foreign aid threatens to create a refugee crisis, and corporate accountability continues with Singapore's Seatrium facing a substantial penalty for Brazilian corruption involvement.

Under the agreement announced Sunday, EU products face 15% US tariffs while American goods enter Europe levy-free. For the EU, the US tariff rate for steel and aluminum imports will remain at 50%. Photo - Jacquelyn Martin/AP
