US Imports Disrupted by de Minimus Removal; Russian Strike Damages EU Delegation; Milei Goes on Defense

August 29, 2025

Good Morning,

The end of the "de minimis" exemption for cheap parcel shipments, nearly a century old, is prompting countries everywhere to suspend shipments to the U.S., leaving American shoppers facing widespread order cancellations as postal services in Australia, India, New Zealand, the U.K. and other parts of Europe have said they will also stop shipping parcels to the States. Meanwhile, the Trump administration continues expanding its controversial deportation program, with Rwanda becoming the third African nation to receive deportees from the United States alongside existing programs in South Sudan and Eswatini. In conflict zones, Israeli forces intensified bombardment of Gaza City killing 16 people, while diplomatic tensions escalated as the EU summoned Russia's envoy after a strike damaged its delegation in Kyiv. Regional security cooperation saw Korea joining Indo-Pacific military talks, and Argentina's President Javier Milei faced mounting pressure as corruption scandals spread throughout his administration.

Packages sent to the United States valued at less than $800 will now face tariffs and fees. They will be charged either the tariff rates the United States has on their countries of origin or flat fees of $80 to $200 — the latter option available to postal carriers only in the first six months. The shipments may face additional tariffs and fees in some cases. Photo - David Paul Morris / Bloomberg via Getty Images file.
