US, China Work to Extend Tariff Deadline; 50 Dead in Burkina Faso Military Base Attack; Europe Moves Toward Independent Security

July 31, 2025

Good Morning,

A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings across more than 20 countries before advisories were lifted for most of the U.S. West Coast, while security concerns mount across multiple regions. In West Africa, a deadly attack on a military base in Burkina Faso claimed approximately 50 soldiers' lives, and Yemen's Houthis have pledged to intensify their maritime attacks on Israeli-linked vessels. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts show mixed progress as the U.S. and China work to extend trade talk deadlines in Stockholm, and 18 nations compete for EU defense funding as Europe pushes for greater military independence from American support. On a more positive note, hunger rates have declined across Latin America, though significant regional disparities persist in the fight against food insecurity.
