Trump, Putin to Meet in Alaska; Europe Debate Ceasefire Proposals; Brazil, Russia Deepen Ties

August 11, 2025

Good Morning,

President Trump announced he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, 2025, in Alaska, marking the first time Putin has been invited to US soil outside the UN since 2007 as Trump pushes for a Ukraine peace agreement. In Africa, Chad's former prime minister and opposition leader Succès Masra was sentenced to 20 years in prison for inciting violence and hate speech following deadly intercommunal clashes that killed 42 people in May. Meanwhile, tensions escalate across multiple fronts as reports emerge of Israel targeting Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza, China monitoring India's military infrastructure upgrades along their disputed border, Ukraine and European allies countering Russian ceasefire proposals, and Brazilian President Lula strengthening ties with Putin in a recent phone call.
