Israel and Iran Continue Attacks; Russia Strikes Oil Refinery Used by Ukraine; Cambodia Takes Thailand to World Court

June 16, 2025

Good Morning,

Global tensions escalated this week as conflicts intensified across multiple regions: Israel and Iran entered their fourth day of broadened attacks, while a deadly raid in central Nigeria claimed at least 45 lives and a fatal border clash prompted Cambodia to take Thailand to the World Court. Meanwhile, Russia targeted a Ukrainian military fuel supply with strikes on an oil refinery, and Trump implemented new immigration enforcement restrictions affecting agricultural and hospitality sectors. Amid these developments, experts examine Latin America's position in the expanding global artificial intelligence competition.

Officials say at least 45 people have been killed during an overnight attack in central Nigeria's Benue state. Eyewitnesses said the attack was carried out by armed cattle herders and police say they then engaged the attackers in a gun battle. Photo - AFP/Getty
