Court Strikes Down Tariffs; Israel Eliminates Sinwar; Panama Declares Emergency

May 29, 2025

Good Morning,

The U.S. Court of International Trade halted President Trump's sweeping 10% "Liberation Day" tariffs on virtually every trading partner, ruling he overstepped his authority under emergency powers law. Meanwhile, conflicts intensify in Gaza where Israel claims to have killed Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar, Sudan grapples with a cholera outbreak affecting over 60,000 people, and Germany pledges €5 billion in aid to Ukraine including joint weapons production. Adding to geopolitical complexities, China reveals plans to arm its Tiangong space station with defensive robots, while Panama declares a state of emergency following strikes by Chiquita banana workers that threaten the critical shipping corridor.

If an intruder approaches Chinese space infrastructure, such as its space station, researcher Sun Zhibin says operators “choose how to respond – whether by dodging, adjusting our orbit, or releasing a small robot to grab and redirect the object”. Photo - Xinhua
